Tralee Classic Games – Rd5
Well I guess Ivanchuck has the right idea when he started to take up draughts. Or maybe snakes and ladders at this rate. More madness and stupidity on the chess board and another one to add to the list of draw refusals then leading to defeat. Though in this game the decline of the draw offer was correct and a win was possibly to be had near the end. Instead I tried to be too smug on the board and instead of grabbing a pawn and activity I messed around with a position which we repeated and then I went mad trying to avoid the repeat when I had less than 40 or 30 seconds and walked into a lost rook endgame out of nothing. A draw was bad but a loss idiotic.
Below is a critical moment in which I could at least reasonably and safely play for a win:
I guess it is a good thing that despite everything I like playing chess and for the most part am creating many good ideas with my execution just not good enough. The bad omen might have been the very first game in which I got a very good advantage with Black so easily and came close to getting a winning advantage, but by not playing the best move in a critical position I let White off the hook and the draw was all I got or deserved really.
All well and good outplaying people but you must be able to follow through with the wins. My game plan had been to beat O Donnell, Murphy, Li, Hill, Delaney, Mueller and maybe Wall too (more optional, as for some reason I don’t do well against him), However with the whole game plan in tatters it is rating points and pride that is all that is left really. Plus a chance to try create some interesting chess.
