Tralee Classic Games – Rd1
Not a bad start for me as I got a clear advantage easily enough from the opening but I went a bit wrong, failed to take my chances and ended up only equal with a comfortable draw. The game with notes is available to play through by clicking on the diagram below:
The rest of the games involving the Irish norm chasers saw Henry Li defeat Killian Delaney is what looked like a complex and hard fought battle that showed signs of the continued improvement of this young rising star.
Meanwhile Alex Lopez got off to a great start with a very valuable win on the Black side of a Sicilian Kan which saw White sac a piece and at a glance seemed to be much better for White, but Alex is very resourceful and I think he just outplayed his opponent. The games might become available later or after the tournament and if they do I will put them online, but there is no live internet coverage of the games as was hoped for. Not sure why but assume the electronic boards were just not available. Photos and video footage of the event will follow in subsequent rounds.
The other big game saw Sam Collins draw on the Black side of an Italian game which had transposed into a Ruy Lopez type position and was for all practical purposes a variation of the Lopez, The main feature of the Italian being that Black has a bishop on c5 whereas in the closed Lopez, it tends to be on e7.
In anycase he seemed to be worse at one point but fought back well to create good counterplay and was better. They agreed a draw when both were down to the increments and less than two minutes, and even one minute on occasions. The final position looked to be finely balanced. A draw with Back against the top seed is surely a good start.
