Irish Ch 2017 Round 1
One player (Paul Walsh) has withdrawn (Very very late in the day it must be said). So according to the ICU website preview page, (as far as previews go, it is not bad at all and it has some very good aspects and useful information. Arguably subjective and, as is unavoidable, on a human level, not without some biased perspectives, perhaps also could be said to contain a bit of wishful thinking too but understandable giving the positive outlook. Notwithstanding some stark omissions and emphasizes it is well worth checking out. I have tried also to offer what I hope is an insightful and experienced – clinical/objective preview by myself available to registered viewers on this website) Luke Scott will now be playing as the replacement player to keep numbers even. Kudos to the ICU for having a backup plan and Luke being able to play, fresh from representing Ireland in Wales on the Glorney Cup team.
With regard to the fact that Gavin Wall and Luke have not been included in the first round pairing and there are 7 games instead of 8 in round 1. It turns out that there were/are complications and problems for both Luke and Gavin being able to play the first round and so what is happening is that each was left out of the draw for the first round and each will get a half point travel bye and it will be a 16 player 8 game per round again from round 2 onward. A bit unusual but stranger things have happened in a chess tournament. The effect would be, as a possible example, that if say all the games were are decisive in round one then Luke and Gavin might not play each other in round two even though each would have a half point.
I recall in 2013 that Killian Delaney had wanted to take two half point byes, owing to other travel plans he had that conflicted, but in fairness to him he ended up making a point of playing all his games in the end. I was certainly not impressed with the concept as I don’t think anybody should get anything for not being available to play in an even numbered Irish ch, but hey, that is just a personal view and has no more validity than being in favour of allowing people have a half point bye, even in an Irish ch with even numbers of players.
Hopefully after the first round things will become more settled and conventional. Should be a great tournament in any event.
