Corkonian Legends Win 2017 Irish Ch
The two legends of Cork and Irish chess; Phillip Short and Alex Lopez emerged victorious as joint winners of the 2017 Irish Chess Championships which ended on August 6 at the West County Hotel Ennis, County Clare. Each of the winners scored 7 points from 9 rounds, albeit in very different styles and pace. Phillip undefeated drawing his last two games in a sedate manner after having beaten seeds 1,2,3 and 5, while Alex kept his best for the last round when he had an impressive last round win with Black that allowed him to join Phillip on 7/9.
Third place went to young Dubliner Conor O Donnell who was very impressive throughout and continues to improve at a rapid rate. He finished on 6.5/9 while on 6/9 and then in fourth place was Irelands only resident Grandmaster and one of the pre tournament favorites Alexander Baburin who only lost to Phillip in round 7.
